VW Type 4 Engine Fan Guard

The Idea

Drilling Wire Start Holes

Prep Work

Because Type 4 engine fan guards were either poor condition originals or overpriced ugly reproductions, I decided to make my own from an original T2 Bus hub cap.

After taking many measurements I was able to create a DXF file of the pattern to be removed from the hub cap. Including all wire start positions.

After inputting the hole centres on a CNC mill, the wire start holes could be drilled through on the 3-dimensional surface of the hub cap,

Using the DXF I was able to cut the design into the hub cap using wire EDM.

This is the hub cap after wire cutting, prior to removal from the waste material.

After being cut away from the waste material the guard was painted and attached to a CNC milled Perspex bezel.
